Extraction: Nutmeg is a volatile oil obtained by steam distillation of the dried brown nuts of the tree, after the shells are broken and discarded. The essential oil is water-white or pale yellow.
Constituents/Active Ingredients: Camphene, pinene, dipentine, sabinene, cymene, borneol, geraniol, linalol, eugenol, terpineol, safrol, myristicin.
General: Nutmeg pure essential oil is a natural flavouring. Used in alcoholic and soft drinks. Excellent to vaporise with orange and clove, especially during winter nights. Tones the body. Strengthens resistance to cold. Traditionally used in pomanders, for example oranges with cloves and dusted in nutmeg.
Historical: Used for hundreds of years in the main as a remedy for digestive and kidney problems. Grated nutmeg mixed with lard for haemorrhoids.
Properties: Stimulating, comforting, warming. Relieves mental fatigue. Analgesic, antiemetic, antiseptic, prostaglandin inhibitor, tonic, antioxidant, antirheumatic, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive, emmenagogue, orexigenic.
Dilute to 4% or less in a carrier oil before applying to the skin. Keep out of eyes. Do not swallow. Use in moderation.
